Responsive Survey Taking Experience

Updated: Jan 3, 2023

Survey content must work seamlessly across all devices. Confirmit(Forsta) provides out-of-the box responsive layouts for online surveys. The Survey Engine team is the product team behind it. My role in this team is to design the respondent experience of the new question types, making sure the question experience for respondents are intuitive, consistent, engaging and mobile-friendly.

Searchable Multiple Choice Question

The searchable multiple choice question is used typically when there is a long list of answer options.

For example, a survey question with a list of 5000+ global airport names and codes. The search is triggered while the respondent starts typing. With airport names, people often don't refer to it by its full name or even don't know the full name. For example, if you're flying out of Washington's Reagan airport, it would be listed as "Reagan...." but you might try to search for it by "Washington". So it’s necessary to make it searchable by any word in the answer choice, not just the first word.

Loading an entire list of 5000 airport names all at once can cause a decrease in performance, plus people are less likely to scan the entire list. Therefore a ‘Load More’ button approach was decided for optimal performance.

Special answer options, like “Prefer not to answer” or “Other” that allow respondents to input their own answer, are always exposed at the bottom of the list. Allowing respondents to scan these special answer options at a glance.

The selected options will always be shown on the right side to improve clarity for the desktop users. As for mobile users, the number of selected answers will stay shown on top of the screen, the users will be able to check their options by clicking into it.

More case studies are to be added. If you 're very interested in the survey experience, click here to take a look at our demo survey.
